A Living Legacy story from MediLodge of Howell’s very own, Mary Alice Bellflower!

Mary is honored and excited to be asked to do the Living Legacy article for the MediLodge of Howell’s Newsletter. Laughing, she recalls this building being a skilled nursing facility and herself being invited for a private tour before its opening years ago as Assistant Payment Workers for Medicaid and A.D.C. Social Workers were invited to the opening.
“Now here I am, living here – full circle” she states.

Mary was born in Arkansas and had five sisters and two brothers – she has stayed very close to her family. She has lost two sisters and has especially missed her sister, Glenda. She and Glenda did a lot together – like movies, garage sales, watching sewing shows, and visiting the antique mall in Howell. She met her husband, David Bruce, at the Farmer’s Market in Plant City, Florida. They were married and had two children, Tracy Ann and David Lee.

Mary worked in a fabric store and loved that job, touching the different textiles and fabrics. Most of her checks went to buying new fabric as she made her own clothing. After settling in Howell, Mary worked at the Dime Store and then found herself working at the Heikkinen and Best Hensick Law Firm before becoming a social worker. The State of Michigan employed Mary for 25 years. She started as a Clerk making $2.45 an hour and advanced within to a Social Worker within a month or two. Back then, there were way too many cases, and she is still amazed that she only went to court one time during those 25 years. She also enjoyed being a part of a theater group, doing props for different shows. She also helped with costumes and liked being in the background of plays.

Mary likes living here and enjoys the view from her room. Seeing her plants and bird watching are her favorite pastime. She enjoys coloring Victorian and Bird Pictures, Painting watching movies, and getting popcorn from the Java Lodge. She is currently looking forward to completing a project with sewing and various notions for a beautiful collage!
